Student Body
MIT enrolls more graduate students, (approximately 6,000 annually) than undergraduates (approximately 4,000). In 2006,
Women constituted 44 percent of all undergraduates and 30 percent of graduate students. The same year, MIT students
represented all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. Territories, and 113 foreign countries. African-Americans
make up 6.3% and 1.8% of the undergraduate and graduate student bodies respectively, Asian-Americans 26.4% and 11.7%,
Hispanics 11.6% and 2.9%, and Native Americans 1.3% and 0.3% respectively. International students comprised 9.2% of
undergraduates and 39.3% of graduate students. The admissions rate for freshmen in 2006 was 13.3% with over 66.2% of
admitted freshmen choosing to enroll. Although graduate admissions are less centralized, they are similarly selective: 19.7%
of 16,153 applications were admitted with 61.2% of admitted candidates enrolling. Undergraduate tuition is $33,400 and
graduate tuition is $33,600 although 64% of undergraduates receive need-based financial aid and 87% of graduate students
are supported by MIT fellowships, research assistantships, or teaching assistantships.
